Heavy Security Deployed at Kano Govt House Ahead of Yusuf’s Planned Defection

There is a heavy security presence at the Kano State Government House today amid widespread reports that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf may defect from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Eyewitnesses and multiple news outlets, including Daily Post, Legit.ng, and SolaceBase, report intensified deployments of security operatives from the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS), and other agencies.

At least seven Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) have been stationed at strategic points, including the main gate and nearby roundabouts, with strict identification checks in place.

The heightened security follows weeks of speculation about the governor's move, originally expected earlier but postponed to January 12 for further consultations with stakeholders, including state assembly members and local leaders.

Sources indicate the defection has deepened rifts within the NNPP, particularly with national leader Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who has opposed the switch and warned of consequences.

While some reports suggest preparations are complete and the governor could announce the defection soon, there is still no official confirmation from Governor Yusuf, his office, or the APC.

Uncertainty persists, with one APC ward chairman stating no directive has been received for a formal registration today.

The potential shift could reshape Kano's political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections, as Yusuf reportedly enjoys backing from most state assembly members and local government chairmen.

The NNPP has distanced itself from any defection plans at the national level.Political observers view the security buildup as a precautionary measure to maintain order amid rising tensions.
