Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has formally rejoined the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Monday, January 26, 2026, marking a major political shift in one of Nigeria's key northern states.
The governor made the announcement during a ceremony where he officially registered as an APC member, accompanied by widespread celebrations at the Kano Government House. NNPP flags were reportedly removed as APC banners took prominence, symbolizing the party's return to dominance in the state.
In a passionate declaration emphasizing his priorities, Governor Yusuf stated:"My loyalty is unwavering, it belongs first to Kano state and its people. Kano first, Kano first, Kano first before any other loyalty."
The move comes after Yusuf's earlier resignation from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) amid internal leadership crises and disputes. It follows his recent meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Abuja and coincides with a mass exodus from the NNPP, including 21 Kano State House of Assembly members who defected to the APC on the same day.
Yusuf's return to the APC where he had previously been aligned before the 2023 elections is viewed as a strategic realignment aimed at fostering better collaboration between the state and federal government. Supporters argue it will unlock greater development opportunities under the Renewed Hope Agenda, while critics see it as political expediency ahead of future polls.
The governor also used the occasion to flag off the APC's e-registration exercise in Kano, signaling efforts to strengthen the party's grassroots structure and membership drive.
