Kano State Governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf is set to formally return to the All Progressives Congress (APC) today, Monday, January 26, 2026, after resigning from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) last Friday.
The development was announced in a statement issued on Sunday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.
The statement recalled that Governor Yusuf originally joined the APC in 2014, when he emerged victorious in the party’s primary for the Kano Central Senatorial District seat, a ticket he later stepped down in favor of Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
After navigating various political platforms in subsequent years, including his tenure under the NNPP, the governor cited “prevailing realities of governance, national cohesion, and development” as the key drivers behind his decision to return to the APC, describing it as a familiar and well-structured platform for progressive governance.
Governor Yusuf emphasized that rejoining the APC would deepen collaboration with the Federal Government, fast-track infrastructural projects, strengthen security coordination, and enhance overall service delivery in Kano State.
He further noted that the move would promote greater political stability and unity across the state. As part of today’s activities, the governor will officially register as an APC member alongside 22 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives representing Kano, and the 44 Local Government Chairmen.
He is also scheduled to launch the APC’s e-registration exercise in the state, signaling a major push to expand the party’s membership base.
The governor’s return to the APC marks a significant shift in Kano’s political landscape and is expected to reshape alliances ahead of future elections.
