Gombe State Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya has approved the disbursement of N14 million to support the families of seven journalists and media workers who perished in a fatal road accident.
The accident occurred on December 29, 2025, along the Billiri-Kumo Road in Gombe State, northeastern Nigeria, as the victims were returning from a colleague's wedding in Kaltungo Local Government Area.
Each of the seven bereaved families received N2 million to help cover burial costs and ease financial burdens.
The gesture reflects the governor's commitment to supporting the media community and mitigating the effects of the tragedy.
Representing the governor at the disbursement ceremony, Secretary to the State Government Professor Ibrahim Abubakar Njodi emphasized that the funds were a compassionate token, not compensation.
He noted prior assistance to injured survivors and confirmed the state would fully cover their medical expenses.
"Our administration remains dedicated to journalists' welfare," Njodi said, expressing profound grief over the loss.
"While nothing can replace the departed, this support aims to alleviate some hardship during this painful time."
He extended condolences to the families, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), the National Television Authority (NTA), and the broader media fraternity, urging reliance on faith for solace.
NUJ National President Comrade Alhassan Yahaya Abdullahi praised the intervention as swift and unprecedented, thanking the state for its support to both deceased families and injured journalists.
He advocated for the federal government to expedite insurance schemes for media professionals and encouraged states like Gombe to participate.
NTA Gombe General Manager Abubakar Adamu relayed gratitude from the NTA Director-General, highlighting the government's compassion.
Speaking for the families, Barrister Abubakar Ahmed described the aid as historic, saying it would address immediate and ongoing needs.
"We are deeply grateful and pray for abundant rewards for the governor and his team."
The crash, reportedly caused by a tyre burst, claimed lives from NTA Gombe and related media roles, underscoring ongoing road safety concerns in Nigeria.
