Five killed, seven injured in Kogi crash caused by wrongful overtaking

The Kogi State sector command of the Federal Road Safety Corps has attributed a motor accident on the Lokoja–Abuja road, which killed five people and injured seven others, to wrongful overtaking.

The FRSC office in Lokoja disclosed that the accident occurred on Tuesday and involved three children—two girls and a boy.

According to the corps, the crash involved two vehicles: a Toyota Avensis car owned by Omala Local Government and a Sino truck belonging to Dangote Cement Plc.

The report further showed that the car with registration Kogi BJK172LG and the truck with registration number REG: BBR719SA had a head-on collision, leading to the death of five people on the spot.

The FRSC said 12 people were involved in the accident, saying that the remaining seven occupants sustained bruises, fractures, and injuries of varying degrees of injuries.

The report said the injured victims were taken to Ekpe Hospital, Ganaja, and ASCO Hospital, Ajaokuta, for treatment, while the corpses of the dead victims were deposited at the morgue of the Kogi State Specialist Hospital, Lokoja.

While attributing the cause of the accident to wrongful overtaking, the FRSC advised motorists to always avoid speeding and wrongful overtaking on the highways.

The FRSC said four hand-held phones recovered from the scene of the accident are under its care, while the vehicles and other luggage were handed over to policemen from Ajaokuta Division.

Highway crashes have claimed many lives in Kogi State in recent times, the latest being a December incident along the Ejule–Enugu highway that left 12 people dead and two others injured.
