The Oyo State Fire Services Agency, on Thursday, said it rescued a man alive during a devastating fire incident at Kara area on the Kishi/Kaima Road in Irepo Local Government Area of the state on Wednesday.
The Special Adviser to Governor Seyi Makinde on Fire Reform and Chairman of the agency, Moroof Akinwande, disclosed this in a statement issued in Ibadan, the state capital.
He explained that the incident was reported to the agency on Wednesday at about 9:00 pm.
Akinwande said, “The fire incident was reported at exactly 21:00hrs on Wednesday, January 14, involving a truck on fire at Kara area along the Kishi/Kaima Road, Irepo LGA of the state.
“Immediately the address was received, a crew of firefighters led by Chief Fire Superintendent Olayiwola Kazeem promptly responded and was deployed to the scene of the incident.
“Upon arrival, it was discovered to be a Volvo truck, with registration number unknown, loaded with rubber materials and engulfed in intense flames. The firemen swiftly swung into action, launched an articulated attack and displayed professional technical know-how to rescue a male person.
“The fire was completely extinguished and prevented from spreading to nearby properties.
“One man was rescued alive and conveyed to a nearby hospital in Kishi. The fire service was able to save nearby buildings and properties from imminent danger. The unfortunate incident resulted from sparks from the engine compartment of the truck while in motion,” Akinwande explained.
The chairman, therefore, urged truck owners to prioritise fire safety guidelines associated with trucks on the road, stressing the importance of having fire extinguishers in all trucks to prevent fire incidents at the incipient stage.
