The Federal Government's newly installed CCTV monitoring system on the Third Mainland Bridge has proven effective, leading to the immediate arrest of three individuals caught vandalizing public infrastructure in real time.
The suspects were apprehended while attempting to remove and steal 156 cat-eye reflective lights (also known as solar road studs) along the bridge's road surface.
These reflective devices enhance road visibility and aesthetics, particularly at night. The vandals, who described themselves as scavengers commonly referred to as "Bola," were paraded before the media and failed to provide convincing explanations for their actions when questioned.
Speaking at the parade, Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, commended the Nigeria Police Force for their swift response and vigilance.
He expressed deep concern over the widespread indifference and destructive behavior some Nigerians exhibit toward public assets.
"The President is working tirelessly to repair and upgrade our roads and bridges, yet some people are bent on destroying them," Umahi stated.
He emphasized the need for collective national ownership and protection of infrastructure, urging citizens to report suspicious activities and discourage vandalism.
The Minister also condemned reckless indiscipline on parts of the ongoing coastal highway project, where disregard for safety protocols recently resulted in the tragic death of a construction worker.
Umahi directed the Lagos State Controller of Works to ensure the arrested vandals face full prosecution.
He issued a stern warning to potential offenders, stating that the "Eagle Eye" CCTV system on the Third Mainland Bridge is fully operational and will continue to detect and prevent such criminal acts.
The recent commissioning of the high-tech CCTV control center equipped with advanced cameras monitoring the bridge deck and even underwater sections demonstrates the government's commitment to enhancing security, curbing vandalism, and improving overall safety on critical federal infrastructure.
