FG Urges Nigerians to Reject False Narratives, Promote Country’s Image

The federal government has tasked Nigerians with promoting the country’s reputation by rejecting false narratives and communicating progress clearly.

Speaking in Abuja on Tuesday, Mohammed Idris, minister of information and national orientation, at the Nigeria reputation summit 2026, urged communication professionals and citizens alike to project the country with confidence and clarity.

Idris said the launch of Nigeria’s first national reputation perception index by the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) was a key step in understanding how the country is viewed both locally and internationally.

“The report is not a verdict on Nigeria. It is a mirror. And as a responsible nation, we must have the courage to look into that mirror and act,” the minister said.

While noting that the index places Nigeria in a low-trust category, Idris said progress has been made under President Bola Tinubu’s administration in the last two years.

The minister said Nigeria’s 27 uninterrupted years of democracy, open political participation, and a relatively free media environment are evidence of democratic stability and credibility.

He also highlighted reforms in governance and the economy, including local government autonomy, security improvements, removal of fuel subsidy, and foreign exchange unification.

“Perception often lags behind reality, but real progress is being made, and it must be communicated clearly, consistently, and honestly,” he added.

“Difficult decisions were taken, but they were necessary. Today, inflation is easing, growth is stabilising, and foreign reserves are improving.”

The summit featured several dignitaries, including Babatunde Fashola, former governor of Lagos and minister of works and housing; Pauline Tallen, former minister of women affairs; Olalekan Fadolapo, director-general of the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON); Jibrin Baba-Ndace, director-general of the Voice of Nigeria (VON); and Ike Neliaku, president of NIPR.
