FG Sets up Committee on Research Commercialisation Policy

The Federal Government has taken a decisive step to bridge the longstanding gap between research outputs and practical economic value by inaugurating two key committees to develop and oversee the National Research-to-Commercialisation Policy.

The initiative, driven by the Ministry of Education, seeks to transform Nigeria’s significant investments in research, conducted across universities, research institutes, and specialised agencies into marketable products, services, and innovations that drive industrial growth, job creation, and national competitiveness.

Dr. Tunji Alausa, Minister of Education, will chair the Steering Committee, which is tasked with providing strategic direction, ensuring alignment with national development priorities, and securing high-level institutional commitment across government.

The Policy Drafting Committee, led by Dr. Tayo Aduloju (CEO of the Nigerian Economic Summit Group), brings together experts from the ministry, academia, industry, legal, and policy domains.

This team will handle the technical development of the policy framework. The minister announced that ₦3 billion has been allocated in the 2026 budget to support the operations of the Research, Innovation and Commercialisation Committee (RICC).

He also revealed plans to better coordinate and streamline existing research funding channels to achieve greater synergy and measurable impact.

Dr. Alausa emphasized that the policy is not merely about commercialisation for profit, but about delivering real developmental outcomes.

“This policy is about ensuring that research solves actual problems, boosts productivity, and strengthens Nigeria’s position in the global economy,” he said.

“We have invested heavily in knowledge creation, but the translation of that knowledge into tangible benefits has remained limited and fragmented.”

The National Research-to-Commercialisation Policy is designed to introduce clear, structured, and nationally consistent mechanisms that guide research from idea to implementation covering commercial, industrial, and social applications.

The Steering Committee will focus on broad oversight and strategic alignment, while the Policy Drafting Committee will develop the full policy document, propose funding and incentive mechanisms, create an implementation roadmap, and establish a results-oriented monitoring and evaluation system.

Dr. Tayo Aduloju, responding to his appointment, committed the committee to delivering an inclusive, evidence-based, and locally relevant policy within the agreed three-month timeframe.

He stressed that Nigeria needs frameworks that reflect its unique realities to accelerate industrialisation and economic transformation.

The launch of these committees signals a renewed government focus on making research and innovation deliberate drivers of national progress rather than isolated academic exercises.
