The Federal Government has commenced the recruitment process for the next cohort of the National Health Fellows Programme, a flagship presidential initiative aimed at building the next generation of leaders to transform Nigeria's health sector.
As part of this nationwide effort, selection panels are now actively interviewing young professionals in Nasarawa State, targeting one fellow from each of the state's 13 Local Government Areas (LGAs).
This step follows the overwhelming response to applications, with over 150,000 submissions received across the country's 774 LGAs for the programme's second cohort (often referred to as NHF 2.0).
Launched under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the National Health Fellows Programme is implemented by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare through the Sector-Wide Approach (SWAp) Coordination Office, in partnership with state ministries of health and development partners.
The initiative seeks to equip emerging talents—aged 25-35 with degrees in health-related fields, IT, social sciences, or related disciplines with essential leadership, management, and technical skills.
Successful fellows will be deployed to primary healthcare facilities in their respective LGAs, focusing on strengthening local health systems, improving service delivery, and addressing the unique challenges faced by rural communities.
Each LGA across Nigeria will host one dedicated fellow to drive grassroots reforms, enhance accountability, and support ongoing efforts to upgrade and expand primary healthcare centres nationwide.
The current interview phase in Nasarawa emphasizes merit-based selection, with panels rigorously assessing applicants' competence, passion, and potential to contribute to rural healthcare improvement.
The process is designed to uphold fairness, transparency, and credibility.Selected fellows will serve for a one-year term, during which they will receive remuneration, training, mentorship, and necessary tools to effect positive change.
This recruitment drive underscores the Federal Government's strong commitment alongside state partners to youth empowerment, leadership development, and sustainable health sector renewal, ensuring better access to quality healthcare for all Nigerians, particularly those in underserved rural areas.
