A serious road accident occurred around noon today on the Otedola Bridge section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway when a mini truck carrying a large load of tomatoes suddenly lost control, reportedly due to brake failure.
The truck veered across lanes and collided with several vehicles, including cars and SUVs, causing extensive damage and scattering tomatoes across the roadway.
The impact created a chaotic scene with debris spread over a wide area.Thankfully, no lives were lost in the crash.
A family traveling in one of the affected SUVs escaped unharmed, despite the vehicle sustaining significant damage.
Emergency response teams, including officials from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), promptly arrived to secure the scene, provide assistance, and begin clearing the wreckage.
Traffic in both directions was heavily disrupted for several hours as a result.Otedola Bridge remains one of the most accident-prone spots on the Lagos-Ibadan corridor, with frequent incidents involving heavy-duty vehicles often linked to brake failure, overloading, inadequate maintenance, and the challenging gradient of the bridge itself.
This latest crash once again highlights the urgent need for stricter enforcement of vehicle safety standards, regular inspections of commercial trucks, and long-term infrastructure upgrades to improve safety for all road users.
Motorists in the Lagos area are advised to exercise extra caution and consider alternative routes where possible until normal traffic flow resumes.
Authorities continue to urge heavy vehicle operators to prioritize regular maintenance to prevent such avoidable incidents.
