FAAN Launches Zero-Emission Electric Transit Services at Abuja Airport

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has taken a significant step toward greener aviation operations by launching zero-emission electric transit services at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA) in Abuja.

The initiative, rolled out in partnership with Possible Electric Mobility and Zeut Energies, introduces electric vehicles, including shuttle buses and sedans for seamless passenger and staff mobility within and to/from the airport.

It marks Nigeria's first fully electric airport shuttle service and positions FAAN as a pioneer in sustainable airport infrastructure, aiming to drastically reduce carbon emissions and align with global green energy standards.

The project was commissioned on Thursday (January 29, 2026) by FAAN Board Chairman H.E. Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, accompanied by Managing Director/Chief Executive Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, along with directors, general managers, heads of departments, partners, and stakeholders.

In his remarks, Ganduje expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Minister of Aviation Festus Keyamo (SAN), Mrs. Kuku, and the development partners for their support, describing the launch as a milestone in modernizing airport operations and promoting environmental sustainability.

Mrs. Kuku emphasized FAAN's broader commitment to energy efficiency, noting ongoing measures such as installing energy-efficient bulbs, solar lighting in terminals, and enhanced waste recycling to minimize fossil fuel reliance.

She reaffirmed the authority's dedication to the green energy transition and thanked President Tinubu, the minister, the FAAN Board, airport management, partners, and stakeholders for their backing.

FAAN has secured approval to deploy up to 100 electric vehicles (EVs) as airport shuttles across NAIA in Abuja and Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos.

The initial phase at Abuja includes 10 state-of-the-art electric shuttle buses and 20 electric saloon vehicles. Operations run daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., with a reported fare of ₦10,000 per passenger for airport-to-city centre trips, designed to encourage adoption of zero-emission transport.

The event wrapped up with Ganduje and Kuku inspecting the electric buses and sedans, personally examining their advanced features.
