The Edo State Police Command has issued a stern warning to motorists following an incident in Benin City, where three officers were injured when a motorist crashed into a checkpoint.
In a statement released on Saturday and signed by the Police
Public Relations Officer, Eno Ikoedem, the Command emphasized that reckless
driving through police checkpoints will no longer be tolerated.
“The Command wishes to reiterate this directive and strongly
warns that there is absolutely no justifiable reason for any motorist to speed
through a police checkpoint except with the intention to evade lawful checks or
endanger the lives of officers on duty,” the statement said.
The warning follows a hit-and-run incident at Iyekogba
Estate Gate, where a driver allegedly drove against traffic, smashed through a
barricade, and turned back toward officers on duty, striking three policemen.
The suspect reportedly lost control moments later, crashing
into several vehicles before being subdued and taken into custody. The injured
officers are currently receiving medical attention.
Police identified the suspect as 19-year-old Nsikak Okon,
describing him as an unlicensed driver.
According to the Command, “Preliminary investigation
indicates that the suspect, Nsikak Okon ‘M’, aged 19 years, is an unlicensed
driver. A black Mercedes-Benz GLK SUV, valued N28 million, belonging to him,
was recovered.”
Investigations further revealed that the vehicle was
unregistered and had been in use since May 2024.
“Items recovered from the suspect include a substance
suspected to be Canadian Loud and a Sprite bottle containing sky-blue liquid
suspected to be diluted refnol,” the police added.
Condemning the attack, the Commissioner of Police, Edo State
Command, CP Monday Agbonika, warned, “Any person who deliberately attacks or
attempts to harm police officers on lawful duty will not be spared, stressing
that enough is enough.”
The Command reassured residents of its dedication to public
safety, stating, “The command reiterates its unwavering commitment to the
protection of the rights and safety of all citizens while ensuring lawful and
professional policing across Edo State.”
Residents were also urged to cooperate with officers as
investigations continue.
