Ekweremadu remains behind bars as wife returns to Enugu after serving sentence

Beatrice Ekweremadu, the wife of former Nigerian Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, has returned to Nigeria following her release from a UK prison.

She arrived in Abuja on Tuesday, January 21, 2026, and was welcomed by family and close associates at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport. This marks her first visit to Nigeria since the legal case began in mid-2022.

Her return sparked celebrations in her hometown of Mpu in Enugu State, even as her husband remains incarcerated in the UK. Beatrice was convicted in May 2023 at London’s Old Bailey for conspiring to facilitate the travel of a 21-year-old Lagos street trader to the UK for kidney h@rvesting. The organ was intended for their daughter, Sonia, who suffers from a chronic kidney condition. The case was prosecuted under the UK’s Modern Slavery Act 2015, the first time the law was used in an organ-harvesting prosecution.

She was sentenced to four years and six months in prison and was released after serving half of her term, a common UK practice for non-violent offenders. Reports say her good behaviour and the UK’s efforts to ease prison overcrowding helped secure her early release.

Her husband, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, is still serving a longer sentence of nine years and eight months, after being identified as the main architect of the plot. Attempts by the Nigerian government to secure his release or transfer have failed. A proposed Prisoner Transfer Agreement in late 2025 was reportedly rejected by the UK Home Office, citing concerns about enforcing the sentence in Nigeria.

Dr. Obinna Obeta, the medical “middleman” in the case, remains imprisoned in the UK on a 10-year term. Their daughter Sonia, who was cleared of charges, continues to stay in the UK for ongoing medical treatment.
