Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) have rearrested Abubakar Malami (SAN), the former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, shortly after he exited the Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja on Monday.
Malami had reportedly perfected his bail conditions following a federal high court ruling granting him, his wife Asabe Bashir, and his son Abdulaziz Malami bail of N500 million each in an ongoing money laundering case brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The family was arraigned in late December 2025 on a 16-count charge alleging the laundering of over N8.7 billion through various companies and bank accounts between 2015 and 2025.
They pleaded not guilty, and the court had ordered the interim forfeiture of 57 properties linked to them valued at approximately N213 billion.
A circulating video shows Malami walking toward a black vehicle believed to belong to the DSS immediately after leaving the prison premises.
In the footage, he is seen requesting the operatives to identify themselves by presenting official identity cards before entering the vehicle.
A DSS source confirmed the arrest, stating that it relates to multiple petitions against Malami, including allegations of terrorism financing.
Reports indicate the move follows the discovery of arms and ammunition at his residence in Birnin Kebbi, which were reportedly uncovered by EFCC operatives and handed over to the DSS for further security investigation.
Malami's media aide, Mohammed Doka, had earlier alleged that DSS operatives were mounting surveillance around Kuje prison with the intent to rearrest him upon release.
Prior to this incident, there were reports of a standoff, with Malami initially hesitant to leave the facility despite meeting bail conditions, due to fears of immediate rearrest.
The rearrest has sparked widespread reactions online and in the media, with some describing it as a dramatic turn in the high-profile case against the influential former minister who served under President Muhammadu Buhari's administration.
Further details on the specific grounds for the DSS action and Malami's current whereabouts remain limited, as neither the DSS nor Malami's team has issued a detailed public statement at the time of this report.
The development comes amid ongoing scrutiny of high-profile figures from the previous administration on corruption-related charges.
