Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu Restores Electricity to Bende After 23 Years of Darkness

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, on Monday commissioned a rehabilitated power line project that has finally reconnected Bende Federal Constituency to the national grid after more than two decades without reliable electricity.

The project, which restores power to the towns of Uzuakoli and Ozuitem among others, ends a 23-year period since 2002 during which residents relied exclusively on generators and solar systems for basic power needs.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony in Bende, Deputy Speaker Kalu expressed deep satisfaction with the achievement, describing it as the fulfillment of a long-standing promise to his constituents.

He acknowledged previous unsuccessful efforts to restore electricity and credited the success of this initiative to persistent advocacy and significant investment.

“This is a worthy development we thank God for. Darkness has vanished in Bende,” Kalu declared.

“In the last 24 years, it's been either solar or a generator. I have tried in the past to make this happen, unfortunately, it failed, but this one, I insisted it must work even though it cost us so much.”

He emphasized the anticipated economic transformation the restored power will bring, noting that small-scale businesses, cottage industries, and potential factories will now have the reliable electricity needed to thrive and expand.

Kalu urged the community to take collective responsibility for protecting the new infrastructure, warning sternly against vandalism.

He called on Presidents-General of autonomous communities, traditional rulers, and youth groups to establish vigilante teams to monitor and safeguard the power lines and installations.

“This will revive small-scale businesses in Bende. Cottage industries and factories will also spring up,” he added, highlighting the broader developmental benefits for the region.

The commissioning marks a major infrastructure victory for Bende Federal Constituency and underscores ongoing efforts by federal lawmakers to address long-neglected basic services in their constituencies.

Residents have welcomed the development as a game-changer for daily life, commerce, and future growth in the area.
