A Federal High Court in Lagos on Tuesday handed a six-month prison sentence to Deji Adesanya, 35, after convicting him for the unlawful possession and trafficking of cannab!s sativa, commonly referred to as mar!juana.
Justice Akintayo Aluko delivered the judgment after Adesanya entered a guilty plea to a single count brought against him by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA.
Prosecuting counsel Peter Ekuri told the court that the defendant was apprehended on November 22, 2025, at Safecourt Apartment, Ikate-Elegushi, Lagos, in possession of five kilograms of cannab!s sativa, a substance prohibited under Nigerian law.
Ekuri said Adesanya had no lawful authority to deal in the drug, an act that constituted an offence under the NDLEA Act.
He added that the charge was punishable under Section 11(c) of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act, Cap N30, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
After the defendant’s plea, the prosecution outlined the facts of the case and tendered relevant exhibits before urging the court to convict and sentence Adesanya accordingly.
Defence counsel R.M.J. Nyiew, however, appealed for clemency, citing her client’s prompt admission of guilt, expressed remorse and undertaking to avoid further unlawful conduct.
She also urged the court to consider a non-custodial sentence.
In his ruling, Justice Aluko noted that Adesanya was a first-time offender with no prior criminal record, a fact confirmed by the prosecution.
The court subsequently sentenced him to six months’ imprisonment, with an option of a fine of N450,000.
