COAS Pushes for Stronger Nigeria–US Military Ties

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has called for strengthened and expanded strategic cooperation between the Nigerian Army and the United States Army to better address Nigeria’s complex and evolving security threats.

The COAS made the appeal during a courtesy visit by the United States Defence Attaché to Nigeria, Lieutenant Colonel Semira Moore, at the Army Headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday, January 14, 2026.

Lieutenant General Shaibu commended the United States Government for its longstanding partnership and consistent support to the Nigerian Army.

He highlighted the substantial benefits derived from American military professionalism and institutional expertise, noting that he and several Principal Staff Officers are alumni of prestigious U.S. professional military institutions, a clear reflection of the depth of the bilateral relationship.

The COAS emphasized the Nigerian Army’s keen interest in leveraging the U.S. Army’s extensive experience in both kinetic (combat-oriented) and non-kinetic (supportive and developmental) operations.

He advocated for broader collaboration in key areas including operational effectiveness, institutional capacity building, doctrine development, and strategic capabilities.

He further stressed that international military partnerships remain essential to complementing Nigeria’s domestic security framework and promoting sustainable peace and stability across the country.

In her remarks, Lieutenant Colonel Semira Moore expressed appreciation for the warm and mutually beneficial relationship between the two armies.

She reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to strengthening existing ties while exploring new avenues of collaboration, particularly in capacity building, intelligence sharing, and joint operational planning.

The U.S. Defence Attaché also confirmed continued American support in vital non-kinetic areas, such as humanitarian assistance and troop welfare initiatives, which she described as critical for sustaining morale and maintaining operational effectiveness in the field.

The meeting highlights ongoing efforts to deepen Nigeria–U.S. defence relations amid persistent security challenges, including insurgency, banditry, and other threats across different regions of the country.

Both sides expressed optimism about future collaborations that could significantly enhance the Nigerian Army’s capabilities.
