Children eligible for pre-K, 3-k regardless of immigration status, New York Mayor confirms

New York City Mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has said the city’s free Pre-K and 3-K programmes are open to all children, irrespective of their immigration status.

The mayor made this known during a press briefing on Friday, stressing that neither children nor their parents are required to disclose their immigration status before enrolment.

According to him, every child living in New York is entitled to access early childhood education under the city’s policy.

“These programmes are for every single New Yorker. We do not ask about immigration status,” Mamdani said.

Pre-K and 3-K are free early education programmes for four-year-olds and three-year-olds in New York City.

Enrollment for the 2026–2027 academic session is currently open and will run until February 27 through the city’s MySchools website.

Mamdani explained that the policy aligns with long-standing city rules designed to make education accessible to all families, particularly in a city where childcare costs are significantly high.
