United States President Donald Trump says he will impose a 100 percent tariff on Canadian exports if the country makes a trade deal with China.
In a Truth Social post, Trump said if Canadian Prime
Minister Mark Carney believes he can turn Canada into a “drop-off port” for
Chinese goods headed to the United States, he was in error.
“If Governor Carney thinks he is going to make Canada a
“Drop Off Port” for China to send goods and products into the United States, he
is sorely mistaken,” he said.
“China will eat Canada alive, completely devour it,
including the destruction of their businesses, social fabric, and general way
of life.
“If Canada makes a deal with China, it will immediately be
hit with a 100% Tariff against all Canadian goods and products coming into the
U.S.A. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
The development comes three days after Trump withdrew an
invitation for Canada to join his ‘Board of Peace’ initiative, which is focused
on resolving global conflicts.
The decision followed Carney’s speech at the World Economic
Forum in Davos, where he criticised powerful countries for using economic
integration as a weapon and tariffs as political leverage.
Carney had paid a courtesy visit to China President Xi
Jinping from January 14 to January 17, where both leaders “committed to
strengthening economic and trade partnership between China and Canada”.
