A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, Peter Obi, has charged Nigerians to be vigilant or risk watching their freedoms vanish before their eyes.
In a post on his verified X handle on Tuesday, Obi said
democracy is more than elections; it’s about protecting dissent, upholding
institutions, and respecting rights.
The former Anambra state governor was responding to a tweet
by former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani.
“When governments kill protesters, intimidate judges, punish
free speech, and flout court orders, democracy isn’t evolving—it’s unraveling.
First-world and third-world democracies are starting to look the same:
authoritarian in practice, regardless of the label.
“Democracy is more than elections; it’s about protecting
dissent, upholding institutions, and respecting rights. When these pillars
collapse, the system itself loses legitimacy. Citizens must stay vigilant or
risk watching their freedoms vanish before their eyes,” Obi wrote.
