Bauchi Finance Commissioner Gets N100m Bail in $9.7m Terror Financing Case

A Federal High Court in Abuja has granted N100 million bail each to Bauchi State Commissioner for Finance Yakubu Adamu and three co-defendants accused of terrorism financing involving $9.7 million.

Justice Mohammed Garba Umar issued the ruling on January 21, 2026, overriding federal government objections via the EFCC.

The judge ruled that the proof of evidence did not sufficiently show terrorism links, stating that ordinary money transfers or donations do not constitute an offense without clear evidence tying them to terrorists or terrorist groups.

Bail conditions include:

  • Two sureties per defendant in the same amount, one a serving Permanent Secretary and the other a Director in the civil service.

  • Surrender of international passports to the court registrar.

  • No foreign travel without court approval.

  • Weekly reporting to the DSS office in Bauchi every Monday until trial ends.

The defendants, Adamu, Balarabe Abdullahi Ilelah, Aminu Mohammed Bose, and Kabiru Yahaya Mohammed pleaded not guilty to the 10-count charge of terrorism financing and money laundering. Some alleged accomplices, including former Accountant-General Sirajo Jaja and Samaila Irmiya Liman, remain at large.

The case was adjourned to March 26, 2026, for trial commencement. This decision reverses an earlier bail denial citing national security concerns. Release depends on meeting all bail terms.
