Kemi Badenoch, leader of the UK Conservative Party, has appointed Nick Timothy as the new shadow justice secretary following the dismissal of Robert Jenrick over an alleged plot to defect from the party.
Badenoch announced Timothy’s appointment on Thursday, hours
after sacking Jenrick from the shadow cabinet, removing the party whip, and
suspending his Conservative Party membership.
In a post on X, Badenoch said she was presented with “clear,
irrefutable evidence” that Jenrick was secretly planning to defect in a way
designed to cause “maximum damage” to his shadow cabinet colleagues and the
wider Conservative Party.
“The British public are tired of political psychodrama, and
so am I. They saw too much of it in the last government; they’re seeing too
much of it in this government. I will not repeat those mistakes,” she wrote.
Badenoch described Timothy as a “true Conservative” with a
strong track record in parliament, citing his role in exposing the failure of
the West Midlands Police chief over the Maccabi football ban and his opposition
to Labour’s Islamophobia definition.
“He brings a wealth of experience and is a formidable
campaigner,” she said.
She added that Timothy would be a “massive asset” to the
shadow cabinet as the party develops its plans for a stronger economy, stronger
borders, and a stronger country.
According to the BBC, Jenrick had allegedly left a printed
copy of his resignation speech unattended, which was later discovered by
others.
Jenrick, who lost the Conservative leadership contest to
Badenoch in 2024, is said by former party colleagues to have struggled to
accept the defeat.
The development marks a significant shake-up within the
Conservative opposition as the party continues efforts to stabilise its ranks
following its loss of power.
