Dele Momodu, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and publisher of Ovation Magazine, has endorsed former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as the most experienced and nationally formidable candidate for the 2027 presidential election.
In an interview on ARISE News on Monday, Momodu asserted that President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) could be defeated with the right strategy, emphasizing Atiku's credentials in mathematics, experience, and exposure.
"Based on mathematics, based on experience, based on exposure, Atiku Abubakar is the most experienced man we will have in the race today. If you are looking at national formidability, it is Atiku," Momodu said.
He highlighted the ADC's efforts to reposition itself as a credible alternative through constitutional reforms, policy development, and coalition-building, aiming to avoid the shortcomings of past opposition efforts.
"APC has taught us that it is not enough for you to fight for power. What do you do with the power when you get it? That is why a lot of things are being put together in terms of constitution, policies and structure," he explained.
Momodu described Nigeria as being in a "state of anomie" and stressed the need for the ADC to demonstrate discipline and differentiation from the APC to compete effectively.
On the coalition's strength, he noted the combined electoral influence of figures like Atiku and Peter Obi from the 2023 election, warning against underestimating the party.
"Any party that currently has two of the top three presidential candidates in the last election must be a serious party. When you add Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi together, the votes are voluminous," he said.
Addressing potential rivalries within the coalition, Momodu acknowledged competition among aspirants like Atiku, Obi, and Rotimi Amaechi but insisted that the party's primaries not consensus should decide the flagbearer.
"There is no question of stepping down for anybody. A primary is an election," he stated. He dismissed age concerns about Atiku, pointing out inconsistencies in similar criticisms of President Tinubu, and concluded that defeating the APC requires experience, unity, and strategic planning."
"Remove emotion and sentiment. Go by raw mathematics, and you will see that Tinubu is defeatable," Momodu added.
