Siminalayi Fubara, governor of Rivers, says his political associates, including prominent chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), have resolved to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid.
Fubara spoke on Thursday during the New Year banquet at the
Rivers government house in Port Harcourt.
The politicians mentioned by the governor are Uche Secondus,
former PDP national chairman; Austin Opara, former deputy speaker of the House
of Representatives; Celestine Omehia, ex-Rivers governor; and Abiye Sekino,
ex-minister of transport.
The aforementioned are allies of Atiku Abubakar, a former
vice-president who is currently a member of the coalition African Democratic
Congress (ADC).
The event was attended by political, religious, and
traditional rulers in the state, including, Peter Odili, a former governor of
Rivers, and his wife, Mary Odili.
Fubara expressed gratitude to Secondus, Opara, Omehia, and
Sekino for attending the programme to show support for himself and Tinubu.
He added that the leaders decided to support his
administration because of their love for the state.
The Rivers governor said there have been comments in some
quarters that the bigwigs are working with anti-Tinubu groups.
“Thank you for joining us for this New Year banquet to tell
the world that you stand with the administration of Siminalayi Fubara,” he
said.
“You are sitting with us boldly so that people will know
that you are not in the business of cutting corners, but you are standing with
Fubara.
“Because you are standing with Fubara, your support is for
Mr. President.
“I want to thank you this evening because you don’t know
what you have done. We are being blackmailed in several places because of your
political activities.
“But I’m happy this evening that you are sitting with us so
that the world will know that you have no affiliation whatsoever with any other
group that is against Mr President.
“Let’s not be fooled by whatever that is happening. Cesar,
in one of his quotes, said, ‘the only reason why the dog barks is because it
doesn’t understand’.
“When the dog starts barking, maybe it is seeing something
it does not understand. We are not barking because we understand. We know where
we are going.”
Over the past few days, there has been renewed hostility
between Fubara and Nyesom Wike, minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT)
and former governor of the state.
Recently, the Rivers House of Assembly rejected a N100,000
Christmas bonus disbursed to each lawmaker by the state government.
During some of the yuletide events hosted by Wike’s
supporters, the FCT minister criticised Fubara while reminding him of the
agreement between them.
