Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule has stated that governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) are not losing sleep over the ongoing impeachment process against Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, describing it as a strictly legal matter governed by due process.
Sule made the remarks during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme on Thursday, January 29, 2026.When asked if APC governors were anxious about the plot to remove Fubara or taking steps to intervene, Sule emphasized that the process must follow the law.
“We are not worried because impeachment cannot occur without due process. The process is strictly guided by the law, and for that reason, we are not worried,” he said.
The comments come amid the lingering political crisis in Rivers State, rooted in the rivalry between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.
The latest impeachment attempt, initiated on January 8, 2026, by a faction of the Rivers State House of Assembly, accuses Fubara of gross misconduct, including failure to present appropriation bills and alleged unauthorised spending of public funds.
However, the process has stalled due to legal and procedural challenges. On January 23, 2026, a Rivers State High Court in Oyigbo adjourned the case indefinitely, pending the outcome of appeals filed by the Speaker and other lawmakers involved.
This marks the third impeachment bid against Fubara in less than three years.Sule’s position reflects the APC leadership’s stance that the matter is for the courts and legislative procedures to handle, with no indication of direct intervention by the party’s governors.
The Rivers political turmoil has seen defections, court battles, and federal interventions in the past, but the latest developments appear to have hit a procedural wall, leaving the impeachment bid in limbo.
