The Zamfara State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has strongly denied allegations that the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Muhammed Matawalle, orchestrated the arrest of Saleem Abubakar, a technical assistant to Governor Dauda Lawal.
In a statement released by the party's State Publicity Secretary, Yusuf Idris Gusau, the APC described the Zamfara State government's accusations as baseless and politically motivated, noting that negative developments affecting the state administration are routinely attributed to Matawalle by the governor or his associates.
The controversy stems from a recent press release by the Zamfara government, which claimed Abubakar was "abducted" in Abuja by operatives allegedly acting on instructions from Matawalle through the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA).
The APC clarified that Abubakar was detained by a Special Forces Unit operating under the NSA, emphasizing that such actions related to national security do not require warrants and are subject to thorough investigation.
The party accused the state government of omitting key details, including allegations that the suspect has ties to terrorism and cybercrime serious offenses warranting federal intervention.
"The state government's swift defense of the suspect only reinforces our longstanding accusations that the PDP-led administration maintains questionable links with bandit elements, some of whom have been apprehended by security forces," the statement read.
The APC commended security agencies for the arrest and urged a rigorous probe, suggesting it could uncover broader threats. It stressed that Matawalle, currently abroad on official duties, could not have been involved in "syndicating" the detention of a junior aide and remains undistracted by such claims.
Dismissing the government's use of the term "abduction" as reckless and potentially libelous, the party praised the NSA's office, the Ministry of Defence, and other security bodies for their proactive efforts in safeguarding national security.
