ADC Faction Rejects Obi, Disowns Enugu Registration

A faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) led by Nafiu Bala Gombe has rejected the reported membership registration of former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, declaring that the process conducted in Enugu does not align with the party's constitutional procedures.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the faction, which claims to represent the "original, constitutionally-governed ADC," distanced itself from reports that Obi was registered at the party's zonal office in Enugu during his high-profile defection event on December 31, 2025.

"The National Working Committee wishes to categorically state that this action does not align with the constitutional and stipulated procedures for membership registration into the African Democratic Congress," the statement read.

It emphasised that the ADC is built on principles of order, discipline, and strict adherence to its constitution, with membership registration clearly defined at the ward level.

"The Office of the National Chairman distances the original, constitutionally-governed ADC from the reported registration of Mr. Peter Obi at the Enugu Zonal office," the faction added, noting that it is investigating the alleged "breach of due process.

"The development highlights the ongoing leadership crisis within the ADC, which has been split between rival factions amid efforts to position the party as a unified opposition platform ahead of the 2027 elections.

Obi's defection to the ADC, alongside prominent South-East leaders at the Nike Lake Resort in Enugu was widely celebrated by coalition supporters, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, as a boost to opposition unity.

However, the Gombe-led faction's rejection underscores internal divisions, similar to previous disputes over Atiku Abubakar's membership registration.

The faction reaffirmed the party's openness to all Nigerians but insisted that any joining must follow established rules.

As opposition forces rally around the ADC to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the factional rift could complicate efforts to present a cohesive front in the lead-up to 2027.
