Google says Nigerians are not just embracing artificial intelligence (AI) but are leading the charge globally.
In its report on Tuesday, titled “Our Life with AI:
Helpfulness in the Hands of More People,” Google said Nigerians are using AI
tools for everything from education to entrepreneurship, showing immense
optimism for the technology’s future.
The survey found that 88 percent of Nigerian adults have
used an AI chatbot — an 18-point increase from 2024 and well above the global
average of 62 percent.
Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, Google’s communications and public
affairs manager for West Africa, said the findings highlight how Nigerians are
using AI creatively to unlock new opportunities.
“It’s inspiring to see how Nigerians are creatively and
purposefully using AI to unlock new opportunities for learning, growth, and
economic empowerment,” Kola-Ogunlade said.
“This report doesn’t just show high adoption rates; it tells
the story of a nation that is actively shaping its future with technology,
using AI as a tool to accelerate progress and achieve its ambitions. We’re
committed to ensuring that AI remains a helpful and accessible tool for
everyone.”
The report said that while learning is now the primary
global use of AI, Nigerians are extending its use to personal and professional
development.
According to Google, 93 percent of Nigerians use AI tools to
learn or understand complex topics, compared with 74 percent globally.
The report also found that 91 percent rely on AI to support
their work, while 80 percent use the technology to explore new business
opportunities or career change — nearly double the global average of 42
percent.
The study said about 91 percent of respondents believe AI is
improving how people learn and access information, compared with about 65
percent globally.
“95% believe university students and educators are likely to
benefit from AI,” the report said.
“Compared to the rest of the world, Nigerians are significantly more optimistic about the potential of AI.”
The report also showed that about 80 percent of Nigerians
are more excited than concerned about the possibilities of AI, compared with a
near-even global split of 53 percent excited and 46 percent concerned.
Google added that the excitement climbs to 90 percent among
Nigerians who use AI “a lot” in their daily lives.
