Twenty-eight travellers, including men, women, and children, who were kidnapped on December 21, 2025, in Zak community, Bashar District of Wase Local Government Area, have been released by their abductors.
The victims were en route from Zak to Sabon Layi community in the same district to attend a Maulud celebration when gunmen ambushed their vehicle, taking them hostage.
Following the abduction, the kidnappers contacted relatives and initially demanded N1.5 million ransom per person a total of N42 million an amount families described as unaffordable.
They pleaded for mercy and unconditional release. The abductors later reduced the demand to N30 million collectively, while also insisting on three brand-new motorcycles as part of the payment.
On Thursday, January 8, 2026, the kidnappers shifted their terms again, reverting to N1.5 million plus one new motorcycle per victim. However, the ordeal ended without the families meeting these escalating demands.
On Thursday night, operatives from the Department of State Services (DSS) informed community leaders that the victims had been rescued.
Sapi’i Sambo, a youth leader in Wase LGA, confirmed the joyful development, stating: “Operatives of DSS called in the night they had rescued the victims. It was good news everywhere in Wase because people had been worried about what would happen if the conditions weren’t met. We’re happy with the development.”
Dauda Ibrahim, a parent from Zak community whose child was among those abducted, also verified the release, saying: “We were told by the security that our children have been released and are currently in Bashar town. We are grateful to God Almighty and to the DSS operatives.”
The release has brought immense relief to the affected families and the wider community in Wase, which has long grappled with persistent incidents of kidnapping, banditry, and cattle rustling.
Authorities have not yet provided details on the circumstances of the rescue operation or whether any suspects were apprehended. Residents continue to call for sustained security measures to prevent future abductions in the region.
