The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has declared itself fully repositioned and determined to reclaim the presidency in 2027, following a strategic closed-door consultation with former Vice President Namadi Sambo in Abuja on Tuesday, January 20, 2026.
Addressing journalists after the meeting, PDP National Chairman Barrister Tanimu Turaki (SAN) said Sambo who served as Vice President under former President Goodluck Jonathan reaffirmed his loyalty to the party and provided valuable guidance on promoting internal unity, legal compliance, and stronger electoral readiness.
Turaki directly addressed speculation about a possible 2027 presidential bid by Jonathan, confirming that the PDP has zoned its presidential ticket to the South and that the contest remains open to all qualified southern aspirants, including the former president.
“As I have always said, we in PDP have zoned our presidential ticket to the southern part of this country,” Turaki stated.
“For now, we do not know who may emerge as our candidate, even though we know those who will not be our candidates. So it’s open for every member of PDP that is living in southern Nigeria or of southern Nigeria descent. The process is going to be open, transparent and fair. It’s going to be equitable, and it’s going to create a level playground for everybody.”
The engagement with Sambo forms part of the PDP’s ongoing reconciliation and rebuilding efforts after the 2023 elections.
Party leaders view the reaffirmation of southern zoning as key to maintaining balance, rallying southern support, and projecting a united front against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next general elections.
No dates for primaries or formal declarations were announced, but Turaki’s comments underscore the PDP’s aggressive push to mobilize nationwide, resolve internal differences, and position itself strongly for a comeback in 2027.
