Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, who served as Peter Obi's running mate on the Labour Party (LP) ticket during the 2023 presidential election, has publicly stated that Obi would be warmly welcomed back to the Labour Party if he fails to secure the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential ticket for the 2027 general elections.
In an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief today, Baba-Ahmed described returning to the LP, the platform that powered their joint 2023 campaign as the most logical and preferable path for Obi.
“I also said if Peter Obi does not get the ticket there in ADC, he is more than welcome back to the Labour Party,” the former senator from Kaduna State said.
“I will stand there and nobody will do anything bad to Peter Obi. It is better for him to come back than for him to do another type of agenda.”
The statement follows Obi’s recent decision to align with the ADC-led opposition coalition, announced during an event in Enugu late last year nearly three years after the duo’s high-profile run under the Labour Party banner that galvanized significant youth support and the “Obidient” movement.
Baba-Ahmed stressed that despite their current political divergence, he remains proud of their joint accomplishments in 2023 and maintains a strong personal relationship with Obi.
He firmly reaffirmed his own commitment to the Labour Party and dismissed reports suggesting he had declared interest in running for president as sensationalized misinformation.
“I never declared to contest the presidency even though there could be a possibility of that happening. I certainly did not declare for the presidency. I simply reiterated my membership of the Labour Party,” he clarified.
“That is all and in the submissions I made, I clearly stated that one will have to wait for the INEC timetable and for the party to make the call for people to indicate their interest.”
He attributed the spread of inaccurate narratives to sensationalism on social media, which he said often misleads the public and emotional listeners.
The remarks come amid broader political realignments in Nigeria’s opposition ahead of 2027, with the ADC coalition positioning itself as a potential unified front against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), while Baba-Ahmed continues to focus on strengthening the Labour Party internally.
The situation highlights the evolving dynamics within the former LP ticket and their supporters as various figures and parties strategize for the next electoral cycle.
