Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State has promised the immediate and dignified repatriation of about 12,000 Nigerian refugees currently living in Minawao Camp in Cameroon’s Far North Region, assuring them that the roads are now safe and their communities secured.
The refugees, mostly women and children from Gwoza LGA border towns such as Ngoshe, Ashgashiya, Attagarawa, Barawa, Bokko and Kirawa, fled deadly Boko Haram attacks in 2014 and have spent over 11 years in exile.
During an emotional visit to the camp on Sunday, Governor Zulum told the cheering refugees:“I am here to tell you that your villages are safe. The military and civilian joint task force have taken full control. We are ready to bring you back home with dignity.”
He announced a comprehensive return package that includes:N500,000 cash grant per household for shelter reconstruction
Additional N100,000 extra for each female-headed household
One solar-powered borehole in every affected community
Agricultural support, including solar irrigation facilities, upon return
“The welfare of refugees, IDPs and returnees is a top priority of this administration. Rebuilding the lives destroyed by Boko Haram remains the cornerstone of our 10-year development plan,” Zulum said.
The governor toured farmlands allocated to the refugees by Cameroonian authorities and commended both the refugees for their resilience and the host government for its generosity.
In response, the Governor of Cameroon’s Far North Region, Mijinyawa Bakari, praised Zulum’s consistent humanitarian support, saying:“Governor Zulum has shown genuine love for his people even beyond Nigeria’s borders. His regular assistance to Minawao Camp is a shining example of brotherhood between Cameroon and Nigeria.”
The repatriation process is expected to begin soon, with security escorts and logistics coordinated between the Borno State Government, the Nigerian military and Cameroonian authorities.
