Yahaya Bello to Challenge Natasha for Kogi Central Senate Seat in 2027

Former Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, has finally bowed to intense pressure from supporters, stakeholders, and political leaders, announcing his intention to contest the Kogi Central Senatorial District seat in the 2027 general elections.

The seat is currently held by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), setting the stage for a potential high-stakes rematch in the Ebira-dominated district.

Sources close to the former governor revealed that Bello's decision came after prolonged consultations, including direct involvement from the current Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, who encouraged the move as part of broader stakeholder engagements.

The Chairman of Okehi Local Government Area, Hon. Amoka Eneji, hailed the development as a "divine blessing" for the Ebira nation, describing Bello's potential candidacy as one that would strengthen the All Progressives Congress (APC) and accelerate development in the district.

"This is in the best interest of Kogi Central," Eneji said, praising Bello's past leadership and unity efforts among the Ebira people.

The announcement has reignited political tensions in Kogi State, where Bello's influence remains significant despite ongoing legal battles with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, who won the seat in 2023 after a tribunal overturned an initial APC victory, has previously dismissed fears of facing Bello directly.

In recent interviews, she described herself as his "worst nightmare," citing her 2023 triumph over a Bello-backed candidate.

Political analysts predict a fiercely contested race, with zoning concerns and intra-party dynamics in the APC likely to play key roles.

Some voices within the party have warned against "imposing" Bello, fearing it could alienate voters in other local government areas.

As 2027 approaches, Kogi Central, comprising Adavi, Ajaokuta, Okehi, Okene, and Ogori-Magongo, appears headed for one of the most watched senatorial battles in Nigeria.
