The United States Embassy in Nigeria has said Nigeria
emerged as the leading African exporter of crude oil to the United States
between January and August 2025.
In a statement posted on X on Tuesday, the embassy said
Nigeria shipped 33.23 million barrels of crude oil to the US within the period,
valued at approximately $2.57 billion.
According to the statement, Nigeria’s crude oil exports
accounted for more than half of all African crude oil shipments to the United
States during the eight-month time frame, underscoring the country’s dominant
position in US–Africa energy trade.
The embassy highlighted that the robust trade relationship
between Nigeria and the US extends beyond energy, noting that strong bilateral
trade ties help create jobs and stimulate economic growth on both sides of the
Atlantic.
“Our strong trade ties create jobs and drive prosperity on
both sides of the Atlantic,” the US Embassy stated, reaffirming the importance
of sustained economic cooperation between Nigeria and the United States.
However, trade data surfaced at the time the US on Monday
announced a plan to begin implementing temporary visas for Nigerians and
fourteen other countries from January 1, 2026.
The now recalled US Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills,
explained that they were part of the country’s broader security protocols
rather than targeted actions against Nigerian citizens.
