In a major blow to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Zamfara State, two members of the State House of Assembly have formally resigned their membership of the party with immediate effect.
Hon. Bashir Aliyu (Anka Constituency) and Hon. Nasiru Abdullahi (Maradun II Constituency) announced their exit in separate letters addressed to their respective ward chairmen and read on the floor of the House during Wednesday’s plenary session.
The lawmakers, both serving their second terms, accused the state APC leadership of “high-handedness, exclusion, and deliberate sidelining of elected representatives,” claiming the party had deviated from its founding principles of justice and internal democracy.
“The current leadership has completely lost the confidence of the majority of members and can no longer provide the platform for us to serve our people effectively,” the lawmakers stated in identical resignation letters.
Sources close to the defectors told Channels Television that the duo may soon announce their movement to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which currently controls the governorship and holds a slim majority in the 24-member Assembly.
The resignation reduces APC’s seats in the Zamfara State House of Assembly from eight to six, further weakening the party’s influence in a state it governed from 2019 to 2023 before losing power to Governor Dauda Lawal.
Reacting to the development, Zamfara APC Publicity Secretary, Mallam Yusuf Idris, described the exit as “a minor distraction,” insisting that the party remains strong and united ahead of future elections.
