The Trump administration has officially renamed the United States Institute of Peace the “Donald J. Trump Institute of Peace” and placed the president’s name prominently above the entrance of its headquarters building.
The State Department announced the change on Wednesday, December 3, describing it as a tribute “to reflect the greatest dealmaker in our nation’s history.”
Photos of the building now show “Donald J. Trump Institute of Peace” displayed in large lettering at the entrance.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio hailed the move on X, writing: “President Trump will be remembered by history as the President of Peace. It’s time our State Department display that.”
The renaming comes despite an ongoing legal battle over control of the institute. Established by Congress in 1984 under President Ronald Reagan as an independent, nonpartisan organisation to promote global conflict resolution, the institute has operated separately from direct government control and owns its own headquarters.
The Trump administration earlier seized control of the agency and significantly cut its funding, actions that remain under challenge in federal court.
