Troops Rescue Eight Kidnap Victims Abandoned on Ikang-Cameroon Waterways

Troops from the 13 Brigade of the Nigerian Army have successfully rescued eight civilians, including two children, who were abducted by suspected militants along the Ikang-Cameroon waterways in Cross River State.

The victims, six adults and two minors were kidnapped on December 29, 2025, when militants intercepted a commercial boat.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for Headquarters 13 Brigade, Major Yemi Sokoya, the rescue operation was triggered by credible intelligence provided by local community members.

"Acting promptly on this information, the troops immediately deployed in pursuit of the perpetrators while simultaneously blocking possible escape routes and dominating the waterways," the statement said.

Faced with the aggressive response from troops operating out of Forward Operating Base (FOB) Ikang, the militants abandoned the victims at Ini-Abasi Fishing Port and fled into the creeks toward the high seas.

The rescued civilians were safely recovered, documented at the brigade's location, and subsequently released to their families. No casualties were recorded on either side during the operation.

Troops have intensified patrols along the waterways to prevent the militants from regrouping or carrying out further attacks.

Commander of 13 Brigade, Brigadier General PO Alimikhena, praised the troops for their professionalism and swift action, while expressing gratitude to the local community for their vital intelligence.

He reassured residents of the brigade's commitment to denying criminals freedom of movement in the area and urged the public to continue providing timely and credible information to security forces.
