Tinubu swears in Aminu Yusuf as population commission chairman

President Bola Tinubu has sworn in Aminu Yusuf as chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC).

The brief ceremony, part of the first segment of the federal executive council (FEC) meeting, was witnessed by cabinet members on Wednesday.

On October 21, the senate unanimously confirmed Yusuf from Niger state as the NPC chairman.

After citations were read, the five permanent secretaries — Abdulkarim Ibrahim, John Ezeamama, Abdul-Sule Garba,  Isiaku Mohammed and  Ukaire Chigbowu — took their oaths of office at 1:42 pm and signed the register.

Yusuf, who was appointed NPC chairman on October 9, was sworn in alongside two of the commission’s members, including Tonga Betara of Yobe state.

The NPC oversees national census, vital registration and demographic data crucial for development planning.

FEC later observed a minute’s silence in honour of Joy Ogwu, a former minister of foreign affairs, who died on October 13 at the age of 79, before proceeding with its eighth council meeting of the year.

In October, the council of state approved Yusuf’s appointment as chairman of the NPC. He succeeds Nasir Isa Kwara, who was appointed in 2020.
