President Bola Tinubu has forwarded the nomination of Dr. Chukwuemeka Chukwu for confirmation as Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Enugu State to the Senate, paving the way for his second and final five-year term at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The request, detailed in a formal letter, was read on the floor of the upper chamber during Thursday's plenary session by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
Tinubu emphasized that the nomination complies with Section 154(1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), highlighting Chukwu's qualifications, including his doctorate degree, and his prior service as Enugu's REC.
"I am pleased to inform you that in exercise of my powers under Section 154(1) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended, I am nominating Dr. Chukwuemeka Chukwu for confirmation as Resident Electoral Commissioner for Enugu State for a second and final term," the letter stated, urging the Senate to accord the matter its "usual expeditious consideration.
"Akpabio promptly referred the nomination to the Senate Committee on INEC, directing it to conduct the necessary screening and submit its report within two weeks.
Chukwu's re-nomination comes amid ongoing efforts to strengthen electoral integrity ahead of future polls, with the Senate's approval seen as a routine but critical step in INEC's leadership continuity.
