President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed the federal government's steadfast commitment to modernizing the Nigerian Army, enhancing its operational capabilities, and prioritizing the welfare of its personnel.
Speaking through Vice President Kashim Shettima at the opening of the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Annual Conference 2025 in Lagos on Monday, President Tinubu underscored the Army's pivotal role in protecting Nigeria's sovereignty and combating persistent security threats.
"No nation can attain greatness without security," Shettima quoted the President as saying. "The Nigerian Army has consistently answered the call of duty, and this administration is determined to deploy all necessary resources across military and law enforcement agencies to neutralize threats and safeguard lives and property."
Vice President Shettima praised COAS Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu and the Army's leadership for fostering a professional, resilient force adept at joint operations and multi-agency collaboration. He noted the government's close oversight of advancements in training, administration, and field operations under the current leadership.
The conference's theme, "Examining the Current Landscape of Terrorism Through the Lenses of Diplomatic and Military Action: Strategy for Long-term Prevention and Stabilisation," was hailed as highly relevant to ongoing national security efforts.
Shettima urged participants to engage in open, experience-based discussions to develop robust strategies for securing Nigeria now and for future generations.Highlighting tangible progress, the Vice President pointed to recent acquisitions, including the induction of helicopters into the Nigerian Army Aviation unit, pilot training programs, procurement of mine-resistant ambush-protected vehicles, armored and patrol vehicles, and the refurbishment of over 100 armored fighting vehicles now back in service.
"These initiatives demonstrate our unwavering dedication to boosting operational readiness and equipping the Army to tackle emerging threats effectively," he stated.On personnel welfare, Shettima stressed the administration's focus on improved amenities and support programs to honor the sacrifices of soldiers and officers. "We remain committed to motivating our troops through better living conditions and initiatives that acknowledge their selfless service," he added.
The Vice President also paid homage to past and present Army leaders, including retired generals and serving commanders, for their enduring contributions to the force's legacy. He acknowledged the attendance of National Assembly members, senior military officials, and other dignitaries.
In closing, Shettima, on behalf of President Tinubu, formally declared the 2025 COAS Annual Conference open, expressing confidence in the Army's professionalism and reiterating full governmental backing for its constitutional duties.
