Vice President Kashim Shettima has revealed that President Bola Tinubu has directed an immediate intensification of security measures in Borno State following a suicide bomb attack on a mosque in Maiduguri that killed at least five worshippers and injured several others.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Shettima strongly condemned the explosion at the mosque in Gamboru Market, describing it as a "despicable assault on innocent citizens and the peace of the nation.
"The blast occurred on Wednesday evening during Maghrib prayers at the Al-Adum Juma’at Mosque, with preliminary investigations suggesting it was a suicide bombing.
Shettima expressed confidence in the nation's security forces, stating that ongoing operations would apprehend the perpetrators and uncover the full details of the incident.“
We sympathise with the Government of Borno State, residents, and families who have lost their loved ones in this attack," he said, adding that those responsible "will face the full weight of the law."
Reaffirming the Tinubu administration's commitment to national security since assuming office in 2023, Shettima emphasised that the government would continue providing necessary resources to defeat terrorism.
The Federal Government is collaborating with state authorities to protect vulnerable communities, particularly in the North East.No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, though such tactics have been associated with jihadist insurgents in the region.
Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum has also condemned the incident as "barbaric and inhumane," pledging enhanced vigilance during the festive period.
