President Bola Tinubu on Thursday declared that Nigeria’s path to becoming a trillion-dollar economy lies in massively investing in the technical and digital capabilities of its youth, describing the country’s young people as “our most valuable resources, greater than oil.”
The President made the declaration at the 3MTT Nigeria National Impact Summit in Abuja, where the administration showcased the transformative results of its flagship Three Million Technical Talent (3MTT) programme.
Represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, President Tinubu said:“This programme is proof that opportunities in the new economy will no longer be confined to Lagos, Abuja or Port Harcourt. Applications for 3MTT have come from every single state and every local government in Nigeria.
We are deliberately restoring hope and showing millions of young Nigerians that they have a real place and a real stake in the global digital future.”
Key achievements of 3MTT so farMinister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, announced that the programme has:
- Trained and placed participants in over 16,000 direct jobs
- Established 201 applied learning centres nationwide
- Engaged more than 600 facilitators and 37 community managers
- Expanded from an initial 30,000 fellows in Phase 1 (December 2023) to 300,000 fellows (10% of the 3 million target) by mid-2024
Global partners throw weight behind 3MTTEU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Gautier Mignot, announced continued European Union funding and technical assistance, describing 3MTT as “a cornerstone of Nigeria’s digital transformation journey.”
Airtel Nigeria CEO, Dinesh Balsingh, pledged sustained corporate support, particularly in reaching rural and underserved communities.Google’s Director for West Africa, Olumide Balogun, hailed the focus on advanced skills such as artificial intelligence and machine learning, saying:“Nigerian developers are no longer just consumers of global technology, they are builders and innovators. With programmes like 3MTT, Nigeria is positioning itself to export world-class solutions to the rest of the world.”
As the summit ended, Dr Tijani reaffirmed the government’s resolve to hit the full target of three million technically skilled Nigerians by 2027, declaring:“The trillion-dollar economy we seek will not be built on crude oil. It will be built on code, creativity, and the unbreakable spirit of Nigerian youth.”
