President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, to immediately commence intensified training and arming of additional forest guards as part of sweeping measures to end kidnapping, banditry and terrorism across Nigeria.
The President gave the order on Tuesday, stressing that criminal elements hiding in the nation’s vast forests must be denied any breathing space.
“We are facing challenges of kidnapping and terrorism here and there. We need all the forces we can muster. We need to protect our people and our forests,” President Tinubu said.
The new directive builds on the President’s earlier approval for the creation of a National Forest Security Service and is aimed at rapidly deploying specially trained and well-armed personnel to dominate forest reserves that have long served as safe havens for bandits, kidnappers and terrorist groups.
President Tinubu charged the Office of the National Security Adviser to work with the Ministries of Environment, Defence, Police Affairs and Interior to ensure immediate and swift execution of the plan.
The move is the latest in a series of decisive actions by the Tinubu administration to tackle insecurity, including the recent declaration of a state of emergency on national security and ongoing mass recruitment into the military, police and other security agencies.
Security analysts have welcomed the directive, noting that properly equipped forest guards will complement military operations and help restore confidence in rural communities long terrorised by non-state actors.
