President Bola Tinubu has constituted a high-level reconciliation committee for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Benue State, appointing House of Representatives Speaker Tajudeen Abbas as its chairman to resolve the protracted feud between Governor Hyacinth Alia and Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) George Akume.
The internal crisis has deeply divided the state chapter, resulting in parallel party structures and rival state chairmen loyal to each faction.
The rift, which escalated after Governor Alia's emergence in 2023, has led to legal battles, public clashes, and weakened party cohesion ahead of future elections.
The committee is mandated to investigate the root causes of factionalism and disunity, engage key stakeholders and party organs to foster reconciliation, and propose structural, procedural, and strategic reforms for lasting peace.
It is also tasked with submitting a comprehensive report with recommendations to President Tinubu.
The panel is expected to commence wide consultations immediately.This marks the second such assignment for Speaker Abbas under President Tinubu, following his chairmanship of a similar committee for Bauchi State's APC crisis in August 2025, which has since concluded and submitted its findings.
The intervention comes amid mounting concerns over the Benue APC's divisions, which observers warn could jeopardize the party's prospects in the state if left unresolved.
