Chidi Odinkalu, former chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), has criticised Abubakar Malami, ex-attorney-general of the federation (AGF), over his recent claims that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is acting politically in its dealings with him.
Odinkalu, in a post on X on Sunday, described Malami as a
“grubby, vexatiously political Attorney-General” during his time in office.
The former chairman of NHRC added that if Malami now
believes that the EFCC is politicised, he should be reminded that “they’re
following what he taught them.
“Someone should tell Abubakar Malami to please sit this out.
He was a grubby, vexatiously political Attorney-General,” the post reads.
“If he’s now complaining that EFCC is political, they should
tell him that they’re following what he taught them. They have no need to deny
it!”
Odinkalu’s remarks follow Malami’s accusation that EFCC
revoked his bail due to his attendance at a political gathering in Kebbi state.
But the EFCC said Malami had not met the five conditions
attached to his provisional bail and described his claims as “untenable”.
The commission emphasised that it was apolitical and urged
the former minister to focus on fulfilling his bail requirements instead of
raising “bogus claims”.
Malami, who is facing an investigation for 18 alleged
offences, including money laundering, abuse of office, and terrorism financing,
claimed he did not default on any bail conditions.
