An overnight collision between a tanker and a heavy-duty truck on Lagos’ Third Mainland Bridge has caused significant traffic disruptions during Monday’s morning rush hour.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority announced the development in a video and statement released early on Monday.
The incident occurred near the University of Lagos waterfront, heading towards the island, impacting motorists exiting the Tollgate towards Iyana Oworo.
LASTMA reported the accident at approximately 6:58 AM local time, noting that the crash happened overnight but its effects lingered into the morning.
According to the agency, areas affected include Alapere inward Lagos Island, the Oshodi–Apapa Expressway inward Lagos Island, and parts of Ikorodu Road, as motorists diverted to avoid the Third Mainland Bridge.
LASTMA said, “Traffic is moving slowly exiting the Tollgate towards Iyana-Oworo due to an accident on the Third Mainland Bridge, near the Unilag waterfront, heading towards the Island.
“A tanker and a truck collided overnight, causing significant disruptions. Our personnel and the Nigerian Police Force are on the scene, actively monitoring traffic and ensuring safety.
“Cones have been placed behind the vehicles to prevent further accidents.”
It added that efforts are underway to evacuate the affected vehicles and restore normal traffic flow.
The traffic agency urged motorists to exercise caution and plan accordingly, as it promises to continue to provide further updates as the situation develops.
