Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, representing Sokoto South Senatorial District, has called for calm and restraint following reports of a recent airstrike in the region conducted as part of collaborative counterterrorism efforts between the Federal Government of Nigeria and the United States.
In a statement issued on Friday, the former governor of Sokoto State acknowledged media and public reports about the operation, which targeted suspected terrorist elements in Sokoto State.
He emphasized the need for communities to remain peaceful and law-abiding while authorities provide clarity on the incident.
"I have noted the reports concerning an airstrike carried out as part of ongoing counterterrorism efforts through cooperation between the Federal Government of Nigeria and the United States," Tambuwal said.
"I urge our communities to remain calm and law-abiding as relevant authorities clarify the circumstances surrounding the operation."
The senator assured residents of Sokoto South that he is actively engaging with security officials to gather comprehensive details and ensure civilian protections are prioritized.
"I wish to assure the people of Sokoto South that I am in active talks with relevant security authorities to obtain full details and ensure that all necessary safeguards are upheld," he added.
Tambuwal stressed that legitimate counterterrorism operations are directed solely at criminal and terrorist groups posing threats to public safety, not innocent civilians who are often victims of insecurity themselves.
"It is important to reassure the public that counterterrorism operations are targeted at criminal and terrorist elements who threaten our collective safety, and not at innocent civilians who are themselves victims of insecurity," he stated.
"The protection of civilian lives remains paramount and remains central to all legitimate security operations."
Praising the dedication of Nigeria's military and security forces, Tambuwal commended their professionalism and sacrifices, often in partnership with international allies, amid challenging conditions to combat terrorism and banditry.
He also appealed to community leaders, traditional rulers, and residents to collaborate with security agencies by providing reliable intelligence and avoiding the spread of misinformation that could escalate tensions.
"Together, through unity, vigilance, and support for lawful security efforts, we will overcome the forces of terror and secure lasting peace for Sokoto State and Nigeria at large," Tambuwal concluded.
The statement comes amid heightened security activities in northwest Nigeria, where joint efforts have aimed to dismantle insurgent networks.
