Suspected Fulani herdsmen have killed at least five young men in a deadly ambush on the Ortese–Yogbo road in Ortese community, Guma Local Government Area of Benue State.According to local reports, the attackers barricaded the major road on December 23, 2025, blocking travelers and launching a sudden assault.
The victims described as youths were killed on the spot, while several others were allegedly abducted and taken to unknown destinations.
The incident has plunged the community into fear and mourning, with residents reporting heightened tension and ongoing discoveries of additional bodies in surrounding areas.
Many locals are now avoiding travel on rural roads amid concerns of further attacks.
Security agencies have yet to issue an official statement, though sources indicate investigations are underway and patrols have been intensified to restore order in Ortese and nearby villages.
Benue State, particularly Guma LGA, has endured recurrent violence attributed to clashes between nomadic herders and farming communities, often over grazing rights and land access.
The state's anti-open grazing law, enacted in 2017, has been cited as a flashpoint, though attacks persist despite security deployments.
Community leaders continue to call for stronger federal intervention to address the cycle of killings, displacements, and abductions.
