A suicide bomber detonated an explosive device near a military checkpoint in Pulka town, Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State, killing five Nigerian soldiers on Sunday, according to security sources and residents.
The attacker, suspected to be affiliated with Boko Haram and originating from hideouts in the nearby Mandara Mountains along the Nigeria-Cameroon border, approached the soldiers pretending to be a passerby before triggering the blast in the Firgi area near Pulka.
Local residents reported that the five soldiers died instantly. One source described the incident as the first suicide attack in the area in over a year, raising concerns about a potential resurgence and calling for enhanced security measures to prevent recurrences.
The Nigerian military has not issued an official statement confirming fatalities, with some reports indicating a denial of deaths and acknowledgment only of injuries to troops who engaged the bomber.
Police confirmed the attack but provided no further details. The incident revives memories of past suicide bombings in Gwoza and surrounding areas, including a June 2024 attack that killed 18 people at a wedding and another in June 2025 that claimed 11 civilian lives at a viewing centre in Konduga.
Suicide bombings, once a hallmark of Boko Haram's tactics during the peak of the insurgency, had become less frequent in recent years amid military gains.
However, the group and its ISWAP splinter continue to operate from remote border regions, launching sporadic attacks on security forces.
The insurgency in northeast Nigeria has persisted for over 15 years, claiming tens of thousands of lives and displacing millions.
